Commentary on the Localised Information

It is notable that the most popular and least popular activities didn’t vary much between all three areas. However, the reasons given for not taking part in particular activities did show some differences between the three areas.

Most and Least Popular Activities

Throughout the whole district, cinema was by far the most popular activity and it was equally popular amongst boys and girls. In second place for boys was taking part in sports, whereas for girls, the second most popular activity was dancing.

Green issues and religious activities were the least popular in all three areas and they scored worst with both girls and boys.

Reasons for young people not doing what they want to do

Almost half of the young people said the main reason they didn’t do what they wanted to do was because they didn’t know what was available. This was by far the main reason given by both boys and girls in all three areas.

In Area 2 and 3, the second most important reason (by almost 25%) was lack of facilities nearby.

However, in Area 1 this reason was only stated by 10% of respondents - probably because Area 1 incorporates Wakefield City Centre which has the most facilities available.

In all three areas, safety issues and parental pressures were the least important factors and very few respondents cited either of these reasons (4.3% parents won’t allow it and 3.2% safety concerns).
